Finding the right career is a big step in life, so it is important to think about what you want from a job before you start looking. List the following factors and your own ideas according to how important they are for you. Compare your results with a partner.

Compare the information on Eric’s CV with the job advertisement. Say why he believes he is a suitable candidate for the position.

7 READING—Looking at the Cover Letter

Read Eric’s cover letter to Magnus & Klein plc and label the parts 1-10

8 WRITING—A COVER LETTER AND A CV

Work with a partner. Choose one of the following tasks.

A

Choose one of the three job advertisements from the previous pages. You and your partner are both going to apply for the job. Compile your own CV in English and write a cover letter. Use any items from Eric’s CV and cover letter that are appropriate for you. When you have finished, exchange your CV’S and cover letters and do peer correction.

B

1. With your partner, talk about what you would like to do in the future. Talk about where you would like to work and what type of work you would like to do. Make some notes and use them to write a shortjob advertisement. Pin it on the wall.

Choose one of the job advertisements from the wall and discuss with your partner. You and your partner are both going to apply for the job. Compile your own CV in English and write a cover letter. Use any items from Eric’s CV and cover letter that are appropriate for you. When you have finished, exchange your CV’S and cover letters and do peer correction.

9 PREPARING FOR AN INTERVIEW

Now it’s your turn. You are going to prepare for a job interview.

The HR office at Magnus & Klein has informed Eric that Ms Shaw will interview him on the phone next week. He prepares himself by making a list of questions Ms Shaw might ask him. He also thinks about what he would like to know from Ms Shaw.

With a partner study the list of typical interview questions and sort them under the correct heading
